In this interesting speech, that Mendel Goldstein gave, the main subject is the actual and futures relations between the EU and Latin-Americans and especially between EU and Mexico.
These are the main subjects because of the Crisis, relation between EU and their neighbors; Europe is interested in Latin America and how EU sprung and how they enter Mexico. But the two main reasons are because we share a lot of ideas similar like democracy. And the other one is that they consider Mexico like a very important partner because of his geographic position between USA and South America, because of their population and because of the political change (since President Salinas) with the integration on NAFTA.
EU enter Mexico in a peace process, they try to relate very good with all the countries of Latin America. EU is the first immersionist and cooperates for the development of Latin America and the second ones in commercial terms. They exist cultural links and values, too. These help us discover the relations between EU and Mexico and the history of the EU.
EU get together with other countries of Latin America to treat subjects of immigration, subjects that concern them, drug trafficking, etc. The cooperation treats lots of points to generate more equitable policies like reforming the state, the justice system and Europe experiences in how to create a social model with more justice. The economic cooperation do more exchanges, inversions, money donations and all this help them teach Latin America to improve products getting near to the EU, with technical support and training to adapt a better the European consumer.
There is a special treaty between EU and Mexico to open more services. After eight years of free trade EU thinks that the agreement has had a very positive result to the future they are going to deepen the relation, it is a strategic partner status in here that they could get in a relation on EU and other country.
The European Union is achieving this goal by different actions like social projects in Chiapas to support workers in the camps, they helped with public funds to help little and middle companies get near to European market, they want to help provide scholarships to Mexican students in Europe and some more things.
The ambassador is trying to explain to everyone how the European Union is helping and trying to help even more Mexico to progress their economy in the world, but specially with the European Union. He explains to us all the kinds of activities that they are doing to help us. Furthermore, the ambassador committed a big mistake by talking in Spanish. First of all because he don’t explains us in a fluid way every topic, he doesn’t know how to conjugate the verbs, and sometimes his ideas are not very clear for the audience.
After the speech ended, the audience asked several questions to the ambassador. The ones we thought were the more interesting ones were the ones from the first person who asked: “What we expect from the European Union in the future if we continue to allow independence as Kosovo recognizing that the logic should be reversed and that both impact the U.S. influence in this movement?” “Do you think has an impact of short, medium or long term, development of missiles in Poland as a response to the whole Russia-Georgia conflict?” But we had a very important question, “What can you do, to make Hermosillo, contribute with an important factor in this treaty?”
We think this speech help us to understand and clear many doubts that we had about how the European Union is trying to help Mexico progress.
